She was notable for being the first battleship in the world armed with 16-inch (410 mm) guns and symbolized Japanese's growing naval power in the interwar period. Nagato served as the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the planning of the attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War II, Japanese Nagato (1919) saw limited direct combat but remained an important part of Japanese’s fleet. She participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944, one of the largest naval battles in history. As the war progressed and fuel shortages worsened, she was mostly confined to Japanese waters. After Japanese’s surrender in 1945, Japanese Nagato (1919) was taken by the United States and used as a target ship during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. She survived the first blast but sank after the second, ending her historic career.
