Lettie G. Howard Schooner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of the Lettie G. Howard, one of the last surviving Grand Banks fishing schooners and a treasured symbol of America's maritime heritage. Launched in 1893 from the renowned C. & R. Poillon Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the Lettie G. Howard was built to fish the rich waters of the North Atlantic with strength, speed, and reliability. Throughout her long and remarkable career, she served as a commercial fishing schooner before being preserved and restored as a sailing museum vessel. Today, she stands as a National Historic Landmark, celebrating the craftsmanship, resilience, and seafaring traditions that shaped the New England fishing industry.
Our 36-inch handcrafted Lettie G. Howard Schooner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this historic sailing vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully proportioned wooden hull and towering twin masts to the intricate standing and running rigging, hand-stitched sails, deckhouses, booms, anchors, railings, fishing dories, and other signature features that define the Lettie G. Howard. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a stunning display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.
The 36-inch model offers an exceptional balance of impressive scale and fine craftsmanship. Its larger size allows for even greater detail and a more commanding display presence while remaining suitable for bookshelves, executive offices, display cabinets, or home libraries. The increased dimensions provide additional realism, making it an outstanding centerpiece for sailing enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, or anyone who appreciates the beauty and heritage of classic working schooners.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:

The Lettie G. Howard is one of the oldest surviving American fishing schooners and a remarkable example of nineteenth-century maritime craftsmanship. Built in 1893 by the Seth Low & Sons shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the vessel was designed to fish the rich waters of the North Atlantic for cod, halibut, and mackerel. Measuring approximately 125 feet (38 meters) overall, the schooner combined speed, cargo capacity, and seaworthiness, allowing her to withstand the demanding conditions of the Grand Banks and Georges Bank. During her early career, the Lettie G. Howard completed numerous successful fishing voyages, helping supply fresh seafood to markets throughout New England while earning a reputation as a dependable working vessel.
As commercial fishing evolved in the twentieth century, the schooner was adapted for other roles, including cargo service along the Atlantic coast and later as a training and educational vessel. Unlike many of her contemporaries that were lost or scrapped, the Lettie G. Howard survived thanks to dedicated preservation efforts and several careful restorations that maintained much of her historic character. Today, she operates as a sail training ship and floating classroom, introducing students and visitors to traditional seamanship, navigation, and maritime history. Designated a National Historic Landmark, the Lettie G. Howard stands as a living reminder of America's rich fishing heritage and the skill, courage, and perseverance of the generations of fishermen and sailors who relied on wind and sail to make their living on the Atlantic Ocean.
