Columbia Schooner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of the Columbia Schooner, one of the most celebrated American fishing schooners ever built and a lasting symbol of New England's rich maritime heritage. Launched in 1923 at the renowned Arthur D. Story Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the Columbia was designed to compete in the fiercely contested International Fishermen's Races between the United States and Canada. Combining remarkable speed, elegant lines, and exceptional seaworthiness, she quickly became one of the finest schooners of her generation. Although her career was tragically cut short after being lost in 1927, the Columbia's legacy lives on through a faithful modern reconstruction, preserving the spirit of one of history's greatest fishing schooners.
Our 36-inch handcrafted Columbia Schooner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this legendary sailing vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully shaped wooden hull and towering twin masts to the intricate standing and running rigging, hand-stitched sails, deckhouses, booms, anchors, railings, deck fittings, and other signature features that define the Columbia Schooner. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a stunning display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.
The 36-inch model offers an exceptional balance of impressive scale and fine craftsmanship. Its larger size allows for even greater detail and a more commanding display presence while remaining suitable for bookshelves, executive offices, display cabinets, or home libraries. The increased dimensions provide additional realism, making it an outstanding centerpiece for sailing enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, or anyone who appreciates the beauty and heritage of classic schooners.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:

History
The Columbia was one of the last and finest American fishing schooners built during the golden age of sail, representing the pinnacle of Gloucester's legendary fishing fleet. Launched on April 17, 1923, at the Arthur D. Story Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the 141-foot schooner was designed by renowned naval architect William Starling Burgess to combine speed, strength, and seaworthiness for commercial fishing on the Grand Banks. Built to challenge Canada's famous schooner Bluenose in the International Fishermen's Trophy races, Columbia quickly became one of Gloucester's most advanced fishing vessels. Under Captain Ben Pine, she competed in the dramatic 1923 races off Halifax, Nova Scotia, where disputed race rulings left the competition without a clear champion, securing Columbia's place in maritime history.
Although designed for racing, Columbia spent most of her career as a hardworking commercial fishing vessel, harvesting cod, halibut, and other North Atlantic species. Tragically, her career ended on August 26, 1927, when she disappeared with all 22 crew members during a powerful gale near Sable Island, Nova Scotia, known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Her loss marked the end of one of America's greatest fishing schooners and symbolized the decline of the sailing fishing fleet as diesel-powered vessels took over. Decades later, her original plans were rediscovered, leading to the launch of a full-scale replica in 2014. Today, Columbia remains an enduring symbol of American maritime heritage and the courage, skill, and determination of North Atlantic fishermen.
