SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse Ocean Liner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, one of the most revolutionary ocean liners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Launched in 1897 for the North German Lloyd (Norddeutscher Lloyd), she was the first German ocean liner to capture the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing, signaling Germany's emergence as a world leader in passenger ship design. Renowned for her luxurious accommodations, four-funnel silhouette, and exceptional speed, the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse ushered in a new era of ocean liner competition. At the outbreak of World War I, she was converted into an auxiliary cruiser before being lost in battle in 1914, securing her place as one of the most iconic ships in maritime history.
Our 36-inch handcrafted SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse Ocean Liner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this legendary vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully proportioned hull and iconic four funnels to the elegant superstructure, promenade decks, lifeboats, masts, cargo booms, ventilators, railings, and other signature features that define the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a stunning display piece worthy of any maritime, ocean liner, or historic steamship collection.
The 36-inch model offers an exceptional balance of impressive scale and fine craftsmanship. Its larger size allows for even greater detail and a more commanding display presence while remaining suitable for bookshelves, executive offices, display cabinets, or home libraries. The increased dimensions provide additional realism, making it an outstanding centerpiece for collectors, ocean liner enthusiasts, maritime historians, or anyone who appreciates the grandeur of the Golden Age of Transatlantic Travel.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

History
The SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was a revolutionary German ocean liner constructed by the Stettiner Vulcan shipyard for the North German Lloyd company. Launched in 1897 and entering service that same year, she fundamentally transformed the landscape of transatlantic travel through her unprecedented size, speed, and luxury. Named in honor of the German Emperor Wilhelm I, the vessel was purposefully designed to challenge British dominance in the Atlantic passenger trade. Featuring elegant, opulent interiors, advanced quadruple-expansion steam engines, and a top speed that enabled her to capture the prestigious Blue Riband for the swiftest Atlantic crossing, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse rapidly became a preeminent symbol of Germany's burgeoning industrial and maritime power.
During her operational tenure, the liner maintained regular service between Bremerhaven and New York, facilitating the transit of wealthy travelers, immigrants, mail, and high-value cargo. Her immediate success served as the catalyst for the construction of subsequent German superliners and ushered in a new, intense era of competition among major European shipping companies. With the outbreak of the First World War, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was requisitioned and converted into an auxiliary cruiser for the Imperial German Navy, conducting attacks against enemy merchant vessels before being forced to seek refuge in neutral waters. In 1914, she was scuttled off the coast of Spanish Sahara to avoid capture by British forces. Although her career was relatively brief, the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse left an enduring legacy as the first true superliner of the modern age, marking the commencement of the great global rivalry for Atlantic supremacy.
