Description

Dunbrody – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted replica of one of Ireland's most treasured historic sailing ships. The Dunbrody is best known for carrying Irish emigrants across the Atlantic during the Great Famine in the mid-nineteenth century. Built in 1845, this three-masted barque transported hundreds of passengers seeking hope and a new life in North America during one of the most challenging periods in Irish history. Today, the Dunbrody stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, courage, and the enduring spirit of those who embarked on life-changing voyages in search of a better future.

Our 36-inch handcrafted Dunbrody model faithfully captures the timeless beauty of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's elegantly curved hull and towering masts to its intricate rigging, bowsprit, wooden deck, deckhouses, lifeboats, stern gallery, and other signature features that define this classic nineteenth-century emigrant sailing ship. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Dunbrody's graceful hull, authentic rigging, and traditional sailing ship architecture to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, library, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for maritime enthusiasts, historians, collectors, and admirers of Irish heritage, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that honors one of Ireland's most iconic emigrant ships.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The Dunbrody Famine Ship is a full-scale replica of a 19th-century three-masted barque that serves as a poignant memorial to the vessels utilized by Irish emigrants during the Great Famine. The original Dunbrody was constructed in Quebec, Canada, in 1845 for the Graves family of New Ross, Ireland, and operated primarily as a merchant and passenger vessel between Ireland, North America, and various international ports. Throughout the mid-1800s, ships of this class facilitated the transport of timber, commercial goods, and thousands of desperate emigrants fleeing poverty and starvation in pursuit of new opportunities overseas. The original vessel remains an enduring symbol of the migration era, encapsulating the profound courage and immense hardship endured by those who crossed the Atlantic in search of survival.

The modern replica was completed in the 1990s and opened to the public in 1998 in New Ross, County Wexford, as a heritage attraction dedicated to the preservation of the Irish emigration narrative. Designed in accordance with rigorous historical research, the replica faithfully recreates the cramped living conditions, daily routines, and severe challenges faced by passengers during their grueling transatlantic voyages. Visitors are invited to explore the vessel to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of those who departed Ireland during one of the most tumultuous periods in its history. Today, the Dunbrody serves as both a floating museum and an educational landmark, honoring the resilience of Irish emigrants while safeguarding the maritime heritage of the 19th-century tall ship era.
