SS Vaterland (1913) Ocean Liner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted replica of one of the most magnificent ocean liners of the early twentieth century. Launched in 1913 for the prestigious Hamburg America Line (HAPAG), the SS Vaterland was among the largest and most luxurious passenger liners ever built, representing the pinnacle of German shipbuilding before the First World War. Designed to offer unparalleled comfort, speed, and elegance on transatlantic voyages, she quickly became the flagship of HAPAG's fleet. Although her remarkable career later continued under different names following World War I, the SS Vaterland remains an enduring symbol of engineering excellence and the golden age of ocean liners.
Our 36-inch handcrafted SS Vaterland (1913) Ocean Liner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's graceful black hull and elegant white superstructure to its three iconic funnels, expansive promenade decks, navigation bridge, lifeboats, cargo booms, masts, deck fittings, and other signature features that made the SS Vaterland one of the world's most recognizable passenger liners. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the SS Vaterland's majestic profile, intricate deck layout, and elegant architectural features to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, library, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for ocean liner enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, and admirers of classic passenger ships, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that celebrates one of the greatest achievements in early twentieth-century ocean liner design.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

History
The SS Vaterland was one of the largest and most luxurious ocean liners constructed prior to the First World War. Built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the Hamburg America Line, she was launched in 1913 as the flagship of the German merchant fleet. Engineered to compete directly with Britain’s preeminent liners, the Vaterland featured grand interiors, expansive public spaces, and advanced maritime technology that rendered her one of the most impressive vessels of the early 20th century. With the capacity to carry thousands of passengers and crew, she operated on the prestigious Hamburg–New York route, effectively symbolizing Germany’s ambition to lead the international passenger shipping industry.
The outbreak of the First World War abruptly altered the Vaterland’s trajectory. While docked in New York in 1914, she was seized by the United States following the nation's entry into the war in 1917 and subsequently renamed the SS Leviathan. Converted into a troopship, she transported more than 100,000 American soldiers to the European theater of operations. After the war, the Leviathan resumed civilian service under the United States Lines, becoming the largest passenger liner in the American merchant fleet and a notable symbol of national pride. However, the onset of the Great Depression and shifting travel trends diminished her profitability, leading to her retirement in 1933 and subsequent scrapping in 1938. Today, the SS Vaterland remains remembered as a benchmark of prewar naval architecture, reflecting both the opulence of the golden age of ocean liners and the profound geopolitical upheavals of the 20th century.
