History

De Zeven Provinciën was an 80-gun Dutch ship of the line built between 1664 and 1665 for the Admiralty of the Maas in Rotterdam by renowned master shipbuilder Salomon Jansz van den Tempel. Its name, meaning "The Seven Provinces," honored the seven autonomous provinces that formed the Dutch Republic during the 17th century.

From 1666 to 1674, the Zeven Provinciën proudly served as the flagship of the legendary Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, one of the greatest naval commanders in Dutch history. The ship played a vital role in many of the era's most significant naval battles, including the Anglo-Dutch Wars, earning a reputation for strength, resilience, and exceptional naval power.

After decades of distinguished service, the ship was decommissioned in 1694 and later dismantled. Today, the Zeven Provinciën remains an enduring symbol of the Dutch Golden Age, with a modern full-scale reconstruction project preserving its remarkable legacy for future generations.
