The History of Enterprise 1930
Built to challenge Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V in the 1930 America's Cup, Enterprise was commissioned by a New York syndicate and designed by naval architect Starling Burgess, with legendary yacht designer Nathaniel “Nat” Herreshoff serving as an adviser.
Together, Burgess and Herreshoff created a groundbreaking J-class yacht that introduced advanced technology to America's Cup racing. Enterprise measured 80 feet at the waterline and featured a heavy keel with twin centerboards for improved stability and maneuverability.
One of her most remarkable features was her towering 162-foot aluminum mast, constructed from two hollow tubes that tapered from 18 inches at the base to 9 inches at the top. Below deck, 24 winches enabled the crew to handle sails and lines with remarkable efficiency for the era.
Enterprise quickly proved her superiority during the American defender trials and was selected to represent the United States against Shamrock V. In September 1930, off Newport, Rhode Island, Enterprise dominated the America's Cup match, defeating Shamrock V in a four-race sweep.
Her victory kept the America's Cup in American hands and further established the J-class yacht as the pinnacle of competitive sailing in the early 20th century.
The Enterprise 1930 Yacht Model brings this remarkable chapter of sailing history to life through authentic proportions, traditional craftsmanship, and carefully reproduced nautical details.
