The Polar Sentinel represents the first vessel of the United States Coast Guard’s new Polar Security Cutter (PSC) class, marking the nation's next generation of heavy polar icebreakers. Named in 2022, the ship honors the Coast Guard's long-standing tradition of protecting American interests in both the Arctic and Antarctic, while highlighting its expanding role in national security, scientific research, and complex maritime operations. Currently under construction by Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding, the vessel is designed to replace the aging USCGC Polar Star, which has served for nearly five decades. Upon completion, the Polar Sentinel will rank among the most capable non-nuclear icebreakers globally, significantly strengthening the United States' capacity for year-round operations in polar regions.

Engineered for extreme conditions, the Polar Sentinel will measure approximately 460 feet (140 m) in length and feature a reinforced steel hull, advanced diesel-electric propulsion, and robust icebreaking power. The cutter is designed to support a versatile range of missions, including maintaining access to vital polar waterways, search and rescue, environmental protection, and logistical support for remote research stations.
