The R/V Falkor was a celebrated oceanographic research vessel dedicated to advancing marine science through cutting-edge exploration and innovation. Originally constructed in 1981 in Germany as the fisheries protection vessel Seefalke, the ship underwent an extensive conversion before beginning its service in 2013 as a state-of-the-art research platform for the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Measuring 272 feet (83 m) in length, the vessel featured advanced laboratories, dynamic positioning, and sophisticated multibeam sonar, complemented by remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). It was engineered to support comprehensive, multidisciplinary research, enabling scientists to investigate diverse fields including geology, marine biology, chemistry, and deep-sea ecosystems.

Over more than a decade of service, the R/V Falkor completed hundreds of expeditions across the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans.
