R/V Neil Armstrong Research Vessel – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the world's most advanced oceanographic research vessels. The R/V Neil Armstrong is a state-of-the-art research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) as part of the U.S. academic research fleet. Commissioned in 2015, the vessel was named in honor of astronaut Neil Armstrong and was designed to support cutting-edge ocean science missions around the world. Equipped with advanced laboratories, sophisticated sonar systems, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) support capabilities, and modern research technology, Neil Armstrong plays a vital role in studying ocean processes, marine ecosystems, climate change, and the unexplored regions of the deep sea.
Our 36-inch handcrafted R/V Neil Armstrong model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the sleek research hull and modern superstructure to the bridge, scientific laboratories, A-frame, cranes, working deck, sonar equipment, satellite communication systems, and other signature features that define this remarkable oceanographic research vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any scientific, maritime, or exploration collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Neil Armstrong's distinctive hull, spacious research deck, and advanced scientific equipment to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for oceanographers, marine scientists, research institutions, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates scientific discovery, innovation, and the continuing exploration of Earth's oceans.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.
Secure Worldwide Delivery
Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The R/V Neil Armstrong is a state-of-the-art oceanographic research vessel engineered to facilitate advanced scientific exploration on a global scale. Commissioned in 2015 and constructed by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Washington, the ship was built for the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research as part of the Neil Armstrong-class fleet. Operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the 238-foot (72.5 m) vessel is named in honor of the first person to walk on the Moon, reflecting his enduring commitment to discovery. It is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, dynamic positioning technology, and sophisticated sonar and sampling systems designed for both deep-sea and coastal research.
The vessel supports a diverse array of scientific missions, including marine biology, geology, ocean circulation, climate research, and seafloor mapping. Its highly flexible design allows for the seamless deployment of underwater robotics, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), alongside a wide variety of oceanographic instrumentation. Since entering service, the R/V Neil Armstrong has completed numerous expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean and beyond, providing critical data that enhances our understanding of Earth's complex climate and marine systems. As a leader in the global research fleet, it continues to drive innovation and foster international scientific collaboration.
