Description
NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (R 337) – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the world's premier ocean exploration vessels. Commissioned in 2008, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (R 337) is the United States' only federal ship dedicated exclusively to systematic ocean exploration. Operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the vessel supports groundbreaking scientific missions to map the seafloor, investigate deep-sea ecosystems, study underwater geology, and discover previously unknown marine life. Equipped with advanced sonar systems, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and state-of-the-art communications technology, Okeanos Explorer continues to expand humanity's understanding of Earth's last great frontier—the deep ocean.
Our 36-inch handcrafted NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the elegantly contoured hull and modern superstructure to the bridge, research laboratories, working deck, A-frame, cranes, satellite communication systems, radar masts, and other signature features that define this remarkable ocean exploration vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any maritime or scientific collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Okeanos Explorer's distinctive hull, expansive research deck, and sophisticated scientific equipment to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for oceanographers, marine scientists, NOAA supporters, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates the innovation, discovery, and scientific excellence of this extraordinary exploration vessel.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.
Secure Worldwide Delivery
Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
Commissioned in 2008, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (R 337) is the United States' first federal vessel dedicated exclusively to ocean exploration. Operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the ship was converted from the former U.S. Navy survey vessel USNS Capable and equipped with cutting-edge scientific systems to investigate the vast regions of the ocean that remain unexplored. Its mission is to expand scientific knowledge of the deep sea by discovering unknown geological features, marine ecosystems, and underwater habitats while making its findings freely available to researchers around the world.
Okeanos Explorer employs advanced multibeam sonar, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), high-definition video systems, and satellite communications that allow scientists around the globe to participate in expeditions in real time. The vessel has mapped thousands of square miles of previously unexplored seabed, documented new species, investigated historic shipwrecks, and contributed valuable information to marine conservation and resource management. Today, it remains one of the world's leading platforms for deep-ocean exploration and scientific discovery.
