History
The SS Great Britain was one of the most revolutionary ships of the nineteenth century, designed by the celebrated British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company. Launched in Bristol, England, in 1843, she was the world's first large iron-hulled, propeller-driven ocean liner, introducing innovations that transformed shipbuilding. Unlike earlier paddle steamers, the Great Britain was powered by a screw propeller, providing greater efficiency, speed, and reliability on long-distance voyages. Her strong iron hull and advanced engineering enabled her to carry more passengers and cargo than previous steamships, setting a new benchmark for transoceanic travel.

Following her maiden voyage to New York in 1845, the SS Great Britain served on Atlantic routes before being adapted for voyages to Australia during the gold rush, transporting thousands of emigrants in search of new opportunities.
