History
The USCGC Storis (WAGB-21) is the newest polar icebreaker in the United States Coast Guard, marking the return of the historic Storis name to American service. Originally built in 2012 by Vard Langsten Shipyard in Norway as the commercial icebreaking offshore vessel Aiviq, the ship was acquired by the Coast Guard in 2024 to strengthen U.S. Arctic operations while the next generation of Polar Security Cutters is under construction. After undergoing extensive modifications to meet military requirements, the vessel was commissioned as USCGC Storis in 2025. Measuring approximately 360 feet (110 m) in length, she is equipped with powerful diesel-electric propulsion, advanced navigation systems, and a reinforced icebreaking hull capable of operating in demanding polar environments.

The USCGC Storis is designed to support a wide range of missions, including Arctic and polar icebreaking, search and rescue, maritime security, scientific research, environmental response, and logistical support for remote regions. The cutter also enhances the Coast Guard's ability to maintain a year-round presence in the rapidly changing Arctic, where commercial activity and strategic interests continue to grow.
