The Swedish HSwMS Gotland Submarine, commissioned by the Swedish Navy in the late 1990s, are globally renowned for their air-independent propulsion system and extreme quietness. This 36-inch model is handcrafted using the plank-on-frame method with premium Canadian red cedar. Depending on the design and finish, production takes 3 to 6 months. From the low-profile sail (conning tower) to the X-shaped rudder and precise hull lines, this model captures Swedish’s leading-edge submarine design. It gained international recognition as the first submarine in the world to use a fully integrated Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system based on Stirling engines — a breakthrough that allowed it to stay submerged much longer than conventional diesel-electric submarines. Built by Kockums AB, the Gotland was designed specifically for coastal defense and stealth, with features optimized for operations in the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. Its quiet operation and agility make it difficult to detect even by advanced sonar systems, making it an effective deterrent against both submarines and surface vessels. In 2005, HSwMS Gotland was leased to the United States Navy for joint training exercises, where it famously "sank" a U.S. aircraft carrier during mock war games — showcasing the potential of modern non-nuclear submarines. After returning to Swedish, it underwent a major mid-life upgrade to extend its operational life.
