Alongside her sister ship Gneisenau, Scharnhorst was part of Germany’s effort to challenge Allied naval power during World War II. Though officially classified as a battleship, she was more lightly armored and faster than traditional counterparts. During the early years of the war, the German Scharnhorst-Class took part in several notable operations, including the sinking of the British armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi and participation in Operation Weserübung, the invasion of Norway. She also disrupted Allied shipping in the Atlantic, though engine issues and battle damage often required long repairs. The German Scharnhorst-Class met her end during the Battle of the North Cape on December 26, 1943. After being caught by British naval forces, including HMS Duke of York, she was sunk with a heavy loss of life. Her sinking marked a significant blow to German’s surface fleet.
