Effie M. Morrissey Schooner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of the Effie M. Morrissey Schooner, one of the most legendary exploration and fishing schooners in American maritime history. Launched in 1894 at the renowned James & Tarr Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the Effie M. Morrissey was originally built as a Grand Banks fishing schooner before embarking on an extraordinary second career as an Arctic exploration vessel. Under the command of famed explorer Captain Robert A. Bartlett, she completed numerous scientific expeditions to the Arctic, carrying researchers, explorers, and supplies through some of the world's most remote and challenging waters. Today, the Effie M. Morrissey remains an enduring symbol of adventure, exploration, and the remarkable craftsmanship of America's classic schooners.
Our 36-inch handcrafted Effie M. Morrissey Schooner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this historic sailing vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully proportioned wooden hull and towering twin masts to the intricate standing and running rigging, hand-stitched sails, deckhouses, booms, anchors, railings, ship's boats, and other signature features that define the Effie M. Morrissey. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a stunning display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.
The 36-inch model offers an exceptional balance of impressive scale and fine craftsmanship. Its larger size allows for even greater detail and a more commanding display presence while remaining suitable for bookshelves, executive offices, display cabinets, or home libraries. The increased dimensions provide additional realism, making it an outstanding centerpiece for sailing enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, or anyone who appreciates the rich heritage of Arctic exploration and classic schooners.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:

History
The Effie M. Morrissey is one of the most celebrated wooden schooners in American maritime history, renowned for her long career as a fishing vessel, Arctic exploration ship, and sail training vessel. Built in 1894 at the James & Tarr Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, the schooner was designed for the demanding Grand Banks fishing trade, where her strong wooden hull and excellent sailing qualities earned a reputation for reliability in the harsh waters of the North Atlantic. During her early years, the vessel harvested cod, halibut, and other valuable fish, becoming a familiar sight in New England's commercial fishing fleet. Her exceptional construction allowed her to withstand heavy seas and long voyages that challenged many vessels of her era.
In the 1920s, the schooner entered a new chapter under famed explorer Robert Bartlett, who transformed her into an Arctic expedition vessel. Renamed Ernestina, she completed more than twenty scientific and exploratory voyages to Greenland and the Canadian Arctic, carrying researchers, supplies, and mapping expeditions through some of the world's most remote waters. Later, the vessel served as a Cape Verde packet ship before returning to the United States, where extensive restoration preserved her historic character. Today, sailing once again as Ernestina-Morrissey, she serves as the official tall ship of Massachusetts and an educational vessel, honoring more than a century of fishing, exploration, and maritime heritage while inspiring future generations of sailors and historians.
